These values vary by moisture content and compaction.
Crushed stone (also called crusher run or gravel base) is the best choice for driveways due to its angular shape that locks together under compaction. A typical driveway uses a 6–8 inch base of crushed stone topped with a 2–3 inch layer of smaller gravel. Pea gravel and river rock are better suited for decorative paths and landscaping.
