Frequently Asked Questions
A block wall calculator estimates the number of concrete blocks, mortar bags, core fill concrete volume, and reinforcement needed for a block wall. By entering wall dimensions, block size, core fill preference, and reinforcement details, the calculator provides a complete material takeoff.
A standard 8x8x16 inch concrete block covers approximately 1.125 square feet (including the mortar joint). This means you need about 0.89 blocks per square foot. For a 10x8x16 block, the coverage is similar in face area but the block is thicker. Our calculator accounts for the specific block size and mortar joint.
You need approximately one 60 lb bag of mortar mix for every 30 concrete blocks with a standard 3/8 inch mortar joint. For 80 lb bags, one bag covers about 40 blocks. These estimates assume standard 8x8x16 blocks and typical joint thickness. Thicker joints or larger blocks may require more mortar.
Core fill concrete volume depends on the block size and fill type. For standard 8x8x16 blocks with partial fill (every other core), you need approximately 0.018 cubic yards per block. For solid fill (all cores), you need about 0.036 cubic yards per block. Our calculator automatically adjusts for your selected fill option.
Control joints are planned vertical gaps in a block wall that allow for movement and help prevent cracking. They are typically spaced at 20–25 feet intervals for concrete masonry walls. Our calculator estimates one control joint for every 20 feet of wall length. Control joints should also be placed at openings and changes in wall height.
