Frequently Asked Questions

A mortar calculator estimates the number of mortar bags, sand, and water needed for brick or block masonry projects. Enter the number of bricks or blocks and the calculator provides quantities for 60 lb and 80 lb mortar bags, sand for on-site mixing, and estimated water requirements.
As a general rule, you need approximately 3 bags of 60 lb mortar mix per 100 bricks with a standard 3/8 inch mortar joint. For 80 lb bags, you need about 2.25 bags per 100 bricks. For concrete blocks, you need approximately 1 bag of 60 lb mortar mix per 30 blocks.
Type N is a general purpose mortar with medium strength (750 psi), ideal for above-grade exterior and interior walls. Type S is a structural mortar with higher strength (1800 psi) for below-grade and structural applications. Type M is a high strength mortar (2500 psi) for heavy load-bearing and below-grade applications. Type N is most commonly used for brick veneer and general masonry.
For mixing mortar on site, you typically need about 0.5 tons of sand per 1000 bricks. A standard mortar mix ratio is 1 part cement to 3 parts sand by volume. Our calculator estimates sand quantity based on the number of bricks or blocks and the mortar type selected.
A standard 60 lb bag of mortar mix requires approximately 3–4 quarts (about 1 gallon) of clean water. An 80 lb bag requires about 4–5 quarts (about 1.25 gallons). Always add water gradually and mix to achieve the desired consistency — the mortar should be stiff enough to hold its shape but plastic enough to spread easily.
