Frequently Asked Questions

This calculator supports four foundation types: basement (full-height walls with footing), crawl space (shorter walls), slab-on-grade (concrete slab with thickened edge), and frost wall (shallow foundation for cold climates). Each type adjusts the wall height and footing requirements automatically.
Wall volume = perimeter length × wall height × wall thickness. Footing volume = perimeter length × footing width × footing depth. The total is the sum of both. This calculator uses the outer perimeter for the footing and inner perimeter for the wall, accounting for corner overlaps.
Waterproofing area is the exterior surface area of the foundation walls below grade that requires waterproofing membrane. It's calculated as the outer perimeter times the wall height. This area determines the amount of waterproofing material needed, typically measured in square feet.
Foundation rebar typically consists of horizontal bars in the wall and vertical bars at intervals. This calculator estimates 2 horizontal bars per wall and vertical bars at 24-inch spacing. For footings, it includes 4 longitudinal bars. Always verify with structural engineering plans.
A frost wall is a shallow foundation used in cold climates that extends below the frost line to prevent heaving. It's typically 4–6 feet tall with a footing at the base. This type of foundation is common for garages, sheds, and additions where a full basement isn't needed.
