Frequently Asked Questions
The number of panels is calculated by dividing the roof width by the panel coverage width (accounting for overlap), then multiplying by the number of rows needed based on rafter length and panel length.
Standing seam panels have raised interlocking seams for a clean, modern look and superior weather resistance. Corrugated panels have wavy profiles and are typically less expensive but have exposed fasteners. Metal shingles mimic the look of asphalt shingles or slate.
Approximately 1 fastener per square foot of roof area is standard for metal roofing. This includes panel screws, ridge cap screws, and trim fasteners. Standing seam systems may use hidden clips instead of exposed fasteners.
Panel coverage width is the actual coverage after overlap, not the total panel width. A 36-inch panel typically has a coverage width of about 34–35 inches after accounting for the overlap between adjoining panels.
Common trim pieces include ridge caps, rake trim, eave trim, gable trim, and valley flashing. The calculator estimates total trim pieces based on roof perimeter length.
Metal roofs require synthetic underlayment to prevent condensation and provide a secondary water barrier. Standard rolls cover 400 sq ft. One roll covers approximately 4 roofing squares.
