Measure the perimeter of your building at the roofline. For most homes, gutter runs along all eaves where water drains. Measure each straight section separately. The total linear feet equals the sum of all roof edges where gutters will be installed.
A general rule is one downspout for every 40 linear feet of gutter. Downspouts should be placed at corners and low points. A typical house needs 3–4 downspouts. Proper placement ensures adequate drainage during heavy rain.
K-style gutters have a flat bottom and decorative shape that resembles crown molding. They handle more water than half-round and are the most common choice. Half-round gutters have a U-shape, are often used on historic homes, and require different hangers.
5-inch gutters are standard for most residential homes. 6-inch gutters handle approximately 40% more water and are recommended for metal roofs, large roofs, or areas with heavy rainfall. Commercial buildings typically use 6-inch or larger gutters.
Standard spacing for gutter hangers is 24 inches (2 feet) on center. Some installers use 36-inch spacing for 6-inch gutters. Closer spacing is recommended in areas with heavy snow or ice loads.
Each downspout typically requires 2 elbows — one at the top where the downspout connects to the gutter and one at the bottom to direct water away from the foundation. Additional elbows may be needed for offsets around obstacles.
