Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the length and width of each room at the widest points. Multiply to get square footage. Add 5-10% for waste and pattern matching. Carpet is typically sold in 12ft, 13.5ft, or 15ft wide rolls, so consider the roll width when planning to minimize seams.
You need the same amount of padding as carpet for each room. Padding is typically sold by the square foot and comes in rolls. Standard padding is 7/16 inch thick, premium is 1/2 inch, and luxury is 5/8 inch. Thicker padding provides more cushion but may not be suitable for all carpet types.
Seaming tape is used to join two pieces of carpet together at seams. You need it when the room width exceeds the carpet roll width, requiring multiple strips of carpet. Seaming tape is typically applied with a heat-activated iron. For most rooms, you'll need 1-2 rolls of seaming tape.
Tack strips are installed along the perimeter of each room to hold the carpet in place. You need tack strips around the entire perimeter of each room. They typically cost $1-3 per linear foot installed. Our calculator estimates the total linear footage needed based on your room dimensions.
Professional carpet installation typically takes 1-2 days for an average-sized home. This includes removing old carpet, preparing the subfloor, installing padding and tack strips, laying and stretching the carpet, and trimming edges. DIY installation can take longer, especially for rooms requiring seaming.
