Frequently Asked Questions

Joint compound (drywall mud) is a gypsum-based paste used to finish drywall joints and corners. It is applied with drywall tape and sanded smooth for a seamless wall surface.
One gallon of joint compound covers approximately 60 sq ft for taping and 80 sq ft for finish coats. For a typical 500 sq ft room with two coats, you will need about 8–10 gallons of compound.
Standard drywall finishing requires at least two coats: a tape coat and a finish coat. For a Level 5 finish, a third coat (skim coat) is applied. Each coat requires sanding between applications.
One roll of drywall tape covers approximately 100 sq ft of drywall area. This estimate accounts for all taped joints including seams, corners, and angles.
