Frequently Asked Questions

A sand calculator estimates the volume, weight, and cost of sand for your project. By entering the dimensions of your area and the desired depth, the calculator tells you how many cubic yards, tons, or truckloads you need, along with an estimated cost based on sand type and local pricing.
A cubic yard of sand typically weighs between 2,400 and 2,700 pounds (1.2 to 1.35 tons). The exact weight depends on moisture content and sand type. Play sand is usually lighter, while concrete sand is denser due to larger particle size distribution.
To estimate tons, calculate the volume in cubic feet, multiply by the material density (typically 95–110 lb per cubic foot), then divide by 2,000 (pounds per ton). For example, 100 cubic feet of concrete sand at 110 lb/cu ft equals 11,000 lbs, or 5.5 tons.
Choose sand based on your project: Play sand for sandboxes and children's play areas (fine, clean), masonry sand for bricklaying and mortar (fine texture), concrete sand for mixing concrete and as a base for pavers (coarse), and fill sand for general filling and leveling (economical).
For paver installations, a 1–2 inch layer of sand is recommended as a bedding layer over a compacted gravel base. The sand helps level the pavers and provides a stable base. Avoid using more than 2 inches, as excess sand can lead to settling and uneven pavers.
