Frequently Asked Questions
A topsoil calculator estimates the volume, weight, and cost of topsoil and garden soil for your landscaping or gardening project. By entering the area dimensions and desired depth, it tells you how many cubic yards, tons, or bags of soil you need.
A cubic yard of topsoil typically weighs between 2,000 and 2,700 pounds (1 to 1.35 tons). The weight varies based on moisture content and composition. Garden soil and compost blends tend to be lighter than screened topsoil.
For most vegetable gardens and flower beds, 6 to 12 inches of topsoil is recommended. Lawns typically need 4 to 6 inches of good-quality topsoil. Raised beds often require 12 to 18 inches for deep-rooted plants.
Topsoil is the natural upper layer of soil, typically screened for debris. Garden soil is a blended mix of topsoil with organic matter, compost, and sometimes perlite or vermiculite for improved drainage and fertility. Garden soil is better for planting beds, while topsoil is better for filling and leveling.
For raised beds, measure the length, width, and desired soil depth in feet. Multiply them together (length x width x depth) to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For irregular-shaped beds, break the area into rectangles or triangles and calculate each section separately.
